Pete Keppler
FOH Engineer

What projects are you currently involved with?

Katy Perry ( FOH, broadcast and post-production mixing).
Recent tours: FOH for David Bowie, Nine Inch Nails, and Rufus Wainwright.

What console(s) do you use?

Digidesign Profile

Describe your signal chain, from the stage mics out to the FOH speakers.

Only things between those two are the console and some amps!

What are your favorite Waves plugins and how do you use them?

Live: C4 and C6 on vocals and keys, TrueVerb and R-DeEsser: on bass, R-Bass on drums, H-Delay.
Studio: Practically everything Waves makes.

What advantages are there to using plugins vs. the processors that come with the desk?

Waves modeling is top-notch… The plug-ins just sound better, and they do things that the desk processing can't. Also, the ease-of-use factor is huge for me, especially in live sound when speed is critical.

What do you see as the main advantages of low latency processing?

Mixing in the studio, I don't usually worry about latency, and I don't normally use plugins while tracking. But for live, low latency is VERY important, not only at FOH, but especially as a monitor engineer, I feel any delay between the artist's performance and their ability to hear themselves is very detrimental, so low latency is key.

What do you see as your main goal for the audience when doing live sound?

As an entire production, to work with the other elements (lighting, video, etc.) to give the audience a show they'll remember. As an engineer, to create a mix that is powerful, with impact and high fidelity, and the impression of high volume, but without the hearing loss!
