Chris BRX Apfalter
FOH Engineer

What projects are you currently involved with?

Kruder & Dorfmeister, TOSCA, S.K.Invitational.

What kind of console(s) do you use?

I use the Soundcraft VI6, Midas Heritage 3000, and the Midas XL3.

Describe your signal chain, from the stage mics out to the FOH speakers.

  1. Signal
  2. Stagebox
  3. FOH Channel
  4. FOH Master with Waves MultiRack inserted
  5. P.A.

What are your favorite Waves plugins and how do you use them?

The API Collection. I use it as a Master plugin on the whole mix, in order to make it crispier and get more punch.

Are you using any plugins on Aux Out for band's wedges / in-ears?

No.

What is the advantage in adding Waves plugins to the processing tools already in your mixer?

The added sound quality and the unique characteristics of the plugins themelves.

How does MultiRack benefit you?

To be honest, I wouldn't bring outboard equipment to a show because of costs, space and transport. Now, with MultiRack, I always have it with me and besides, I have special presets for each song!

What new features would improve your workflow, results, and/or fun factor?

I’m happy with the way it is.

Are you recording or virtual sound-checking the shows?

I record every show on two separate stereo tracks: one for the band, the other for vocals. Cubase4 is running alongside the MultiRack.

What do you see as your main goal for the audience when doing live sound?

I want the audience to feel like being in the middle of a really “fat” sounding club. The sound has to have lots of punch and really nice, warm highs. People should be able to understand every word of the MCs and, after the show, they should walk out with a smile on their face instead of tinnitus in their ears.
